Our nightmare began in May of 2020 when the book keeper left my husband's law firm unexpectedly. The office administrator… More of 32 years announced her retirement to be July 31, 2020. Our only legal secretary, also a long term employee of over 20 years, stated she would be retiring at the same time. The only administrative employee remaining had been with the firm less than 6 months and was our receptionist. My husband asked me to come fill in until we could hire new employees. My background is in administration but not accounting! For a few months, I was able to keep our heads above water by ensuring bills were paid, invoices went out, payroll was submitted but I knew I didn't know what I was doing and feared I was making a mess. I didn't know what I didn't know and I knew I didn't know! Sleepless nights trying to find a solution. We were in the height of COVID and hiring just wasn't happening. Not finding a replacement for our bookkeeper ultimately was the biggest blessing in all of this chaos. I reached out to a friend who is an attorney at a law firm very similar to ours in size and scope of business. I asked if we could "borrow" their bookkeeper to come help/train me. He told me they did not have an inhouse employee but instead outsources their accounting department to a company call FinOp Group. He wouldn't speak more highly of their organization and Greg Critchfield. I contacted Greg immediately via email, and explained our situation. I am pretty sure I used the work "desperate".
